These biology themed images do make for excellent backdrops! They are very striking, however I do find that the figures get lost in them.
How about, between the layer of the backdrop and the drawing, you add a plain colour with some transparency and see if that 'wash' makes your figures stand out a tiny bit.
You can also try adding some gaussian blur to the background as well perhaps, as anything sharp is seen first.
